- The insulation of dangerous electric poles continues in Bulgaria
New 18 electric poles are insulated in Northern Bulgaria under the LIFE+ project “The Return of the Neophron”. The insulation is one of the most important direct conservation project activities and it started on the 17 of July 2013 with the insulation of 10 electric poles.
The line is considered to be particularly dangerous because of the type of poles and it is located in a vast plain area with mosaic located arable fields and pastures. The area is inhabited with juvenile Egyptian vultures, which have just learned to fly and by landing on dangerous poles they can find their own death.
It is planned a total of 34 poles to be insulated on this line. That is critical for protection of the subpopulation of Egyptian vultures in Northern Bulgaria.
Insulation of the pillars is done by Energo-Pro under a memorandum for cooperation with BSPB.
In 2012 and 2013, BSPB experts mapped over 7300 electric poles of various types along 500 km power lines in Bulgaria. The mapped dangerous poles fall into 14 breeding territories of Egyptian Vultures within 9 Natura 2000 areas.
