The Egyptian vultures of Dadia managed to overpower all threats for a day

It's been a while since we visited our young friends in Dadia, the hometown of our programme in North Greeece. So when finally the weather gave us a window of opportunity we gathered our toys and went to spend our morning with the children of Dadia's Kindergarden and Primary school Twenty two primary school students and six pre-school children with their teachers opened wholeheartedly the doors of their school at the foots of Dadia's forest and together we trasnformed in a struggling but brave population of Egyptian vultures, ready to fight any challenges.

First, the children had to keep the population afloat while being "attacked" by the multitude of the threats, like illegal hunting, electrocution, lack of food resources, that the species faces. A good team effort allowed them to "survive" though it was obvious that an endangered population is quite easy to collapse.

The second game focused on the threat of poison baits. The children played both the role of the Egyptian vulture as well as of the antipoison dog unit. It was a difficult task to live through the widespread use of poison bait that occurred that day but once more, with a good team effort the Egyptian vultures managed to survive and see another day.

Till we meet again!

The Egyptian vulture is never directly prosecuted through the use of poison baits, as is the fox. The possibility though to be poisoned by consuming a poisoned animal is nonetheless quite high (A. Kafetzis, WWF Greece)
