Egyptian vulture in help to other species

Wounded Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) found near Madzharovo

On 25th July, during the fieldwork under the LIFE+ project “The Return of the Neophron”, we were notified about large injured bird on the road near Madzharovo. We checked the site immediately and discovered that this is actually an Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) – very weak, with a gash near the ear and heavily invaded by ticks on the head (obviously the bird has been staying on the ground for several days). It is interesting that the species has not been reported so far for Madzharovo.

We transported the bird to the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre in Stara Zagora. Thanks to the effective coordination with the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters in Haskovo on the way we also get two White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) into trouble – a juvenile with twisted wing and an electrocuted adult. With this, our car became the Doctor Dolittle’s ambulance. The Green Balkans veterinarian team professionally investigated and helped the feathered patients.

Hope the birds will recover quickly and soon will be returned into the wild.
